VICF’s Very Own Katharine Carol Nominated for YWCA Women of Distinction Award

May 03, 2017

We are thrilled to announce that our Artistic and Executive Director, Katharine Carol, has been nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction Award!

Each year, the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards honours individuals and organizations whose outstanding activities and achievements contribute to the well-being and future of our community.  Katharine Carol is among the 2017 Arts, Culture & Design nominees. The Arts, Culture & Design award recognizes extraordinary women leaders who enrich Vancouver through a commitment to the arts, who promote the artistry of others, and who build community.

“I am obsessed with challenging society’s notion of what children’s art must look like,” states Katharine. “Whether the art is pure entertainment or deep, meaningful work, it must always have incredibly high production values and be the best work possible.”

Katharine’s unfailing commitment to the arts is best demonstrated in her work at the Children’s Festival.  Thanks to the dedication of Katharine, the Vancouver International Children’s Festival is celebrating its 40th year.  Katharine repositioned the Festival as an urban arts festival that is now, in the words of Mayor Gregor Robertson, “a crown jewel in the city’s cultural life.” Katharine is passionate about the importance of the arts to our cultural health and works tirelessly to make professional artistic performances accessible to children across the Lower Mainland. The Festival’s Youth for Youth program has flourished under Katharine’s guidance since she added a new mentorship component.  Emerging, young artists can showcase their work and further develop their artistic talents through outstanding mentorship with local, established artists.  She brings passion, vision and thoughtfulness to whatever she does and is truly a woman of distinction.

The Vancouver International Children’s Festival congratulates Katharine on this fantastic achievement, the Festival would not be where it is today without her hard work and dedication!
