Help us save Kids Fest

May 20, 2011

The Vancouver International Children?s Festival, model for so many children?s festivals around the world, is on the ropes.  We?re very proud that we have successfully moved the 2011 event from
Vanier Park to Granville Island. The Island is the perfect place for the Festival as we will now have venues that can showcase the best children?s entertainment in the world.

Everyone on Granville Island has been tremendously supportive of the Festival?s move, so audiences can look forward to not only a great event, but also all of the amenities, shops and food options
that the island provides.  As an added bonus – no more mud.  If the rains do come, we can take shelter, have a hot chocolate or play in Kids Market.  And we will still have wonderful outdoor spaces
and lots of interactive activities for our little ones who aren?t fazed by any kind of weather.

Sadly, the Festival is fazed by huge budget cuts to the arts.  Our local and international programming and use of the Granville Island venues this year will show our community what we?re capable
of.  But, without additional support from the community in the form of ticket purchases and donations, the 2011 Kids? Fest could be Vancouver?s last.

This year?s Festival will deliver not only a great event but a balanced budget.   However, due to funding cuts over the past two years the festival has a deficit of $140,000 which, without either a
sell-out or donations, we will not have the resources to retire enough of the deficit to carry on.

The Festival has a clear strategy  for the next few years to retire the deficit and move on to deliver many more years of children?s entertainment, but we are appealing to the public to not wait
and purchase tickets for this year?s event or supporting Kids Fest with a donation.  Whether or not we will be able to mount a Festival in 2012 depends on strong box office receipts this year.

Why save the Kids? Fest? Because, for 35 years, the Vancouver  International Children?s Festival has been igniting the minds of young people.   Ask any 20-year-old you know and they will remember
a connection at Kids Fest.  Today?s little ones deserve the same inspiration to be found at one of our premier Vancouver festivals.

Thanks Vancouver!
